Plattsburgh GA to host teach-in on December 10th
On December 10th from 12:00 pm to 5:00 pm, the Plattsburgh General Assembly will be holding the first in a proposed series of what they call “Communiversity” events, teach-ins that will seek to educate citizens on different issues pertaining to the community, and create a discussion on how individuals can work together to tackle them. The event is completely free and will be hosted at the North Country Food Co-op, located at 25 Bridge Street, just across from the Durkee Street parking lot.
Teach-ins are a type of public forum that aim to educate, energize and engage the community. While teach-ins do feature a moderator presenting their expertise on a certain topic, all participants are highly encouraged to ask questions and to add to the overall discussion.
The event is open to all community members, and will offer discussions and workshops on an array of topics. The goal of the event is to assist citizens in working together to address their concerns about local and national issues, including economic, social, agricultural and emotional affairs. The sessions will be moderated by community members who have offered to share their knowledge and experience concerning the proposed topics, and future events will give opportunity for others to come forward and do the same. Some workshops will be repeated for those who cannot attend all of the day’s sessions, and light refreshments will be provided for participants.
SCHEDULE OF EVENTS:
12:00 pm – Bringing the Economy Home
1:00 pm – How to Organize an Event/Demonstration
(will also be offered at 3:00 pm)
2:00 pm – Bringing Agriculture Home
3:00 pm – How to Know Violence and Nonviolence
(will also be offered at 1:00 pm)
4:00 pm – Bringing the Discussion Home
GA proposes teach-in event
Hey everyone, earlier today we had a meeting about the teach-in event, here is what was discussed:
The name COMMUNIVERSITY was proposed and agreed upon as a title for this and future teach-in style events we put on
We had a discussion of presentation topics/presenters
-It was suggested that we try to turn all presentations into workshops, and ask participants to recognize and express their connections to the topics presented and understand what they can do to help.
-Folks seemed to be in agreement over showing the Story of Broke short
(find it here: http://www.storyofstuff.org/movies-all/story-of-broke)
-It was proposed that we use NationalPriorities.org to obtain and share figures for local economic statistics
-It was expressed that shopping local can help, but no difference will be made until corporate tax rates are made fair with those of local businesses, and that tax revenues overall need to be focused locally
-It was proposed that we have escorts at the door and possibly outside of Co-op, as well as signs on floor or walls directing people to the upstairs area
-It was proposed that we network with existing community working groups, such as the Food Group and Community Garden people
-A repeat of this event was proposed, to be held at the U.U. Fellowship sometime next month. The U.U. would provide areas for childcare, a huge plus for any event we hold
We will continue discussing this on Sunday. If you’d like to engage in the discussion, be at the ROTA Gallery at 19 Clinton St. at 4:00 pm. If you would like to help in the planning of the teach-in, we ask that you do the following things for Sunday:
-Prepare an outline or summary of things to share that are related to the agreed upon discussion “issues”
-Think of groups we can outreach to
-The idea of a compiling a short list of online resources related to each “issue” to hand out was proposed. Please look at the list of “issues” below and see if you have any relevant resources to share.
Kevin will bring a rudimentary poster for the event, and Matt (myself) will bring a draft of a press release for the event so that we can all approve of the promotional materials on Sunday and begin promoting as soon as possible.
Schedule of events/list of “issues” being covered:
*NOTE: the tactic workshops will be held simultaneously and will each be repeated once so that everyone in attendance can visit both.
Introduction: who we are, what is the purpose of this event
issue workshop: ECONOMICS
tactic workshop: NONVIOLENCE
tactic workshop: HOW TO PLAN AN EVENT
issue workshop: AGRICULTURE
